Species Management Specialists (SMS) is a non-profit international association of members dedicated to promoting the sustainable use of the world's natural resources.
The SMS membership consists of a diverse group of representatives from the wildlife, fisheries, forestry and agricultural industries, indigenous people's organizations, responsible organizations and individuals from around the world.
SMS has a governance structure that is built upon the principles of participation, democracy and equity. SMS has 3 levels of decision making, as follows:
- The Annual General Meeting of the SMS Members is the highest decision-making body. The purpose of the AGM is to maintain the balance of voting power between different interests without having to limit the number of members.
- The Board of Directors is accountable to the SMS Members. It is made up of 5 individuals who are elected for an annual term, but are available for re-election.
- The Executive Officer runs SMS on a daily basis from a head office in Darwin, Australia.
